How big is your home?

This gives us a sensible starting point for how much electricity you use in a year. Roughly is fine.

Why does this matter?

Solar saves you the most when you use the electricity your panels make, rather than sending it back to the grid. A rough idea of your yearly usage lets us estimate that. A typical 3-bed home near here uses around 3,700 units (kWh) a year.

Which way does your roof face?

South-facing panels make the most electricity. East or west still work well. Not sure? Pick "Not sure" and we'll use a fair average.

How do I know which way my roof faces?

Check a maps app, or use the compass on your phone at the front of the house. The direction the main roof slope points is what matters. East/west roofs typically make only about 15-20% less than a perfect south-facing one.

Is your roof shaded?

Shade from trees, chimneys or nearby buildings lowers how much your panels make, especially around midday.

Does shade ruin solar?

Not necessarily. A bit of shade lowers output rather than stopping it, and modern setups can use panel-level optimisers so one shaded panel doesn't drag the rest down. Heavy all-day shade is the real problem - we'll assess it properly on a survey.

What is "kWp" and how many do I need?

kWp (kilowatt-peak) is the size of the system - bigger number, more electricity. A typical 3-bed home has around 4-4.5 kWp, which is roughly 10 panels over 20-30 m² of roof.

Add a battery?

A battery stores the solar you don't use in the day so you can use it in the evening - more savings, but more cost.

Is a battery worth it?

A battery means you rely on the grid far less, so you save more each year. It does add cost and can lengthen the payback a little unless you're on a smart tariff - but it also gives you backup power in a cut. Happy to talk it through.

Is someone usually home in the day?

If the house is busy 9-5, or you run the washing and dishwasher during the day, you'll use more of your solar directly - which saves more.

Why does being home matter?

Using solar as it's made is worth more than exporting it - you avoid paying ~25p a unit to buy electricity, but only earn ~12p for the surplus you export. So the more you use during the day, the more you save. A battery helps if the house is empty 9-5.
